The Jackdaw Inn, Tadcaster

A largely unchanged 1966-built pub complete with bits of stone facing and huge amounts of the sort of ornaments and decorations that were common back in the day. Indeed, apart from the odd bit of electronics you could easily be in the 1970s (so it just felt comfortably reassuring as a place to drink!). The beer mats have been breeding since the last review and now cover most flat surfaces, while the right hand bar now holds a pool table. There is a beer garden and large kiddies play area at the rear. Still serving Sam Smiths keg beers but now down to one working handpump, which was dispensing Hobgoblin Session IPA in surprisingly fair condition and on offer at £3. Definitely worth a visit if passing and you remember what pubs used to be like.

An estate pub a short walk from John Smith's brewery, it's on the 840/843 Coastliner route. Two bars, to the left is traditional and overdecorated with beer mats, and the odd nick-nack. There's a few interesting bits of breweriana as well. Two pulls, excellent Black Sheep and untried Tetley's , three T-bars, two with national favourites and one of Sam's core range; the beer mats also came from Sams. The other bar is a pleasant lounge, much smaller and intimate but with only a clutch of keg taps.
