The Corn Exchange (JD Wetherspoon), Bury St. Edmunds

More than adequately described in previous reviews it is a magnificent building. There is a sign by the entrance doors saying there is a lift at the side of the building, it’s diagonally opposite the Nutshell, it emerges in a vestibule to the right of the servery. A standard 5+5 pull configuration at each end, festival beers at the right hand end, more festival beers and the dastardly duo of Abbot and IPA from local boys Greene King at the other. The toilets are for men at the top of the left hand staircase, ladies between the stairs in the bar and disabled to the right of the right hand staircase also in the bar.

The Corn Exchange is a Wetherspoons located on the first floor above some shops in the old… erm… corn exchange. The grand pillared entrance leads to a foyer where a beer fridge on the rear wall is flanked by two very impressive ironwork tables, I’d love one of them in my garden. There are options to climb up to the first floor via left and right-hand flights of stairs, after some thought I chose left, but I could’ve picked either of them because they both lead up to the same large open plan space that sits under a giant curved glass ceiling. On the front wall between the two entrance doors is a large fireplace, the type I’d imagine being in a lodge. A sea of tables and chairs stretch from here to the serving counter along the rear wall. Seating also runs from front to rear on the other side of stone arches up the left and right-hand sides of the pub. The counter supports the usual standard and premium keg alongside two banks of five hand pumps that were drawing the usual three plus Branscombe Brewery’s Summa This, Brewster’s Brewery’s Winter Draws On, Oakham’s Citra and Creature Comforts Brewing’s Automatic Pale Ale, so not a huge range of cask for a Spoons of this size. This is certainly an impressive building, so it’s worth a visit if in the area.

Called in again. Beers on were Wolf Lavender Honey and Woild Moild, Daleside Morocco and Dale Jekyll & Hyde.

Interesting Spoon's above the shops in the old Corn Exchange. One large room with a fantastic ceiling! I did note a couple of decent beers but I can't remember them now! Worth a visit.

Very impressive building, with the 'spoons facilities at first-floor level above a range of other shops so not as large inside as one might expect but plenty of interest wherever you sit. However, the beer selection was particularly poor during my post-coronavirus visit, although my dodgy pint of Oakham JHB was quickly replaced with an Old Speckled Hen with very good grace.
