St Peter’s Tavern, Liverpool

Visited on a Friday afternoon in May, and was very impressed with St Peter's Tavern. This is a church conversion and part of the 1936 Pub Company chain that seems quite prolific across Liverpool city centre. As you enter, the long bar counter is on the far wall, boasting 12 hand pulls with 9 ales and 3 ciders at the time of my visit. My half of Neptune Harlequin Krush set me back £2.50, so not the cheapest in the city centre but if you tell me I'm paying for the view then it's definitely worth it. The bar is massively deep; that alone is quite an experience. Booths sit on a raised area to the front of the building opposite the bar. The far end has marble pillars and candles, presumably the original altar area, an obvious nod to its previous function as a place of worship. There is a separate room off beyond the bar, and further booths directly behind the bar, along with access to the toilets. There is also a mezzanine level (although according to the previous reviewer, I must have missed the multiple levels). There is a beer garden. I really enjoyed my visit to this place - a beer in beautiful surroundings - what more can you ask for? I shall be back!

An old church still retaining its altar and many old features, I was moved to remove my cap on entering. Ahead and to the left is a long counter with 12 pulls of mostly Northern beers, three with cider, two low T-bars of mixed kegs and an Erdinger ceramic, another 1936 Pubco pub so a similar beer range to their other pubs. There’s a fitted out but apparently unused counter to the left. Three mezzanine floors have been inserted giving more seating areas upstairs, if you can find the stairs up to them (by the front door). The uppermost level has screens. A very different drinking experience.

An amazing bar converted from St Peters church. It's huge inside with several areas including an upstairs (not visited). Reasonably busy on a Wednesday, early evening, but getting served can be a problem, with loads of seats for bar leaners, getting in the way. Too many handpumps really, judging by the beer quality, which was OK rather than good. We got our drinks and went and sat on the alter which is covered in tables and chairs. A great, newish venue that we'll no doubt we revisiting soon as we're often at this end of town.
