I have to admit to being prejudiced against Blue Monkey brewery. It's a combination of frustration at their pump clips always featuring chimpanzees, which are not monkeys, and the dreadful pun of the 4.9% stout, Guerilla. Puns should be short-lived and greeted by a loud groan, a pun that lasts years needs to be taken out and shot. Having said which I quite like this pub and my halves of Coopers best bitter and BG Sips (groan) pale were in very good condition, priced at £2.40 each rather than half of £4.70 (which is the price on the blackboard). I was here a few years ago but neglected to write up my notes, so I'm here to make amends, and I'm glad I did. Decent pub. Good beer. Dreadful puns.

I'm slowly warming to it. Decent (if lone and overworked) barman and playlist today. A good set of scores on the doors (Blue Monkey Primate NBSS 4.5, Cinder Toffee 3.5, English Rose 3). Rear room which I had not noticed before. Remains a GBG staple and is the local branch POTY on a semi-regular basis, though it feels like there is a hint of laziness/bias given that there is good competition in the local area. 7.5

Fair to say I was looking mildly forward to seeing if this much-hyped place could be any better than the crushing disappointment I encountered three years ago. The answer turned out to be a yes. Service was an improvement and the cask ale much better, the Infinity Plus 1 by Blue Monkey was ace (NBSS 4) though the Dark Academia by Round Corner Brewing was clearly the first out for a little while (NBSS 3). Rated 7

Blue Monkey place with their usual decor and feel; dark blue and grey. Fairly opened-out interior with seating based around the perimeter. Nice rear garden and a selection of papers. Macavity barman. Indie chin stroker soundtrack. Six ales over eight pumps, all BM with a Goffs guest. My BG Sips had a very slight note of diacetyl (NBSS 2). WiFi broken. One other customer and no atmosphere so I shoved off. Maybe I came at the wrong time but I didn’t get the positive vibes from the reviews below. GBG’22 listed. Rated 5

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Organ Grinder

Deservedly award-winning Blue Monkey pub with a very traditional, if opened out, L-shaped alehouse interior. That aside, most people are here for the beer, and there was the same wide choice from the nine handpumps as on my last visit 18 months ago. Apart from Abbeydale's Absolution and Titanic Plum Porter as guests, the brewery's own beers covered a wide range of styles (including my Infinity IPA).
