Blackthorn _ left this review about The Princes Motto

Recently reopened having been closed for a couple of years, this has now been taken on by the owner of the nearby Yew Tree Farm, and this is reflected in the available offering, with a small shop area at the front of the pub consisting of various fresh and frozen meats, as well as a few dried goods. This in no way dominated though, it just seemed to be a useful addition to the available choice, and we departed with some frozen faggots.

Internally it’s clearly been freshened up a bit, but quite sympathetically to what was there previously. It consists of quite a small room at the front, with just a couple of tables, the bar counter and the aforementioned shop. Flooring was old flagstones, whilst the floors and ceiling were whitewashed with pale green wood panelling on the bar counter and the similar coloured wood strip in the walls. A bookcase in one corner housed a collection of board games, whilst a fireplace was off to one side with a wood burning stove, and above this was a colourful watercolour of a cow led on a sofa. A long and fairly narrow room runs along the rear of the pub, and this was quite cosy with old wooden boards on the floor, green wood panelling on the lower part of the walls, comfy old sofa’s at either end and some exposed brickwork. Another smaller room is off of this behind the bar counter.

Only one beer on tap, although I suspect they don’t get the throughput to warrant any more. It appears to change regularly going on the “cask of the day” sign and on this occasion was Twisted Oak’s Fallen Tree, served directly from a barrel racked up on the end of the bar. They also had Butcombe Original on keg and Thatcher’s Gold cider. Overall I quite liked this, the welcome was very friendly and it’s great to see it reopen again, although I thought the advertised karaoke on a forthcoming Friday seemed rather at odds with the style of pub. Perhaps they’re still finding their feet and seeing what works.
