Arriving after nightfall we weren't able to appreciate the canal-side views this pub offers, albeit it was well-populated for a weeknight: Wednesdays being Quiz Night as we soon discovered. A cosy interior with bar facing you on entry, there's seating either side of the entrance, a pool table on a raised area to the right (where we sat), deeper seating to the left, and a partially-hidden room to the left and almost behind the bar. One suspects the pub would have been multi-roomed in a previous life. This doesn't appear to be the Greene King pub Alan Winfield encountered some sixteen years ago: four ales in the form of Ossett White Rat, Castle Rock Elsie Mo, Shipstone's Red Star and Woodforde's Albion (stout) – three local ales and a Norfolkian interloper, along with badges for 3 x Lilley's ciders. Pints of the Red Star (good) and Albion (very good) came in at £4 each, and as usual I learnt of a 15p per pint Camra discount after the fact, although the barmaid did call me 'lovely': which was nice. Aside from her, my work colleague and I were the youngest in here by a country mile, although we did get cheery goodbyes from a couple of the locals and the Quizmaster as we were leaving.
