As the Globe, this pub has existed here since at least the mid-19th century, but I suspect the current structure probably dates from the 1930s, a polychromatic relief of a map of the world to the parapet; as an East End boozer it closed around 2003 to become a succession of cafés or pizza-type dispensaries on Columbia Road, home to Columbia Road Flower Market.
Passed on many an occasion over the years, the other night yet another attempt to gain access to the venue and if you approach from Hackney Road, the first thing that greets you are the locale’s wheelie bins outside; charming! The next thing I noticed was the satin rope across the entrance barring my entry, despite no mention made of it hosting a private event, unsurprising given that the place has nothing but a homepage with only the venue name and address (though not even a postcode) with no other information.
The interior is typical wine bar in execution, with mixed-age local customers.
This isn’t my type of place even if I had been allowed in; the charming Royal Oak is a short walk.

No cask. Keg offering of Guinness and Pillars Pilsner plus a lager and pale ale by bottle.

Far end of Columbia Road away from City end. Terrace out the front with patio style tables and chairs occupied by drinkers on my visit. If you enter through the door on the left-hand side, the area is for drinkers with a ledge down the left-hand wall and tall stools. The bar counter is on this side. The other side and larger side of the venue, all of which is bare boarded, is a series of regular tables and chairs for diners. Low lighting, no screens and a very background light music soundtrack. I came here to dine with a friend but it was clear I would have been welcomed as a drinker in the bar area and that didn’t depend on the busyness of the venue, the dining side was full, and I had booked around 5 weeks prior to the visit it is that popular as a dining destination.
