A very pleasant traditional village pub, friendly and welcoming, which appeals to its locals as well as the numerous twitchers and other recreational pedestrians who manage to wander away from the tourist path. It's currently owned by Palmers. A stone-built 18th Century building with 15th Century roots, it sits at the heart of a chocolate-box village off the beaten track. There is a lawned garden at the rear and a reasonably-sized car park at the side as well as some benches and tables at the front. The inglenook bar described by Ian, below, has oak beams and tiled floors, and there is a separate dining room behind that. The human menu is home cooked, while they also offer a full dog menu, expensive and gimmicky but probably helpful to some people. Home-made cakes were also on offer. Draft ales on were Palmers, of course, the choices being Copper, Dorset Gold and IPA, plus First Press cider on draft. On keg were Carlsberg, Moretti, Guinness, Dorset Pale, Orchard Gold and Orchard Haze. Well worth finding, but check opening hours first as these are restricted.

My local for the week. Will add comments after we have dined there.

Traditional village local - with a room to the left for dining and a room to the right for drinking. Central hatch manned by a "greeter". Three Palmers on - Gold, IPA and Copper.... plus a still cider Dorset First Press on handpull.

Lovely inglenook fireplace on the drinking side. Fairy lights and horse brasses on the low beams.

Perfect for my weeks needs!

Update after dining: We had two meals there - both excellent. All meals seem to come in small or regular sizes. The portions are huge, so probably would consider the small if you are having starters/pudding. The Sunday Lunch was excellent. Mid Week menu traditional pub grub but well served.
