I'm not quite sure what to make of this place. My visit was on a midweek evening. It may feel different at other times but it certainly didn't feel like a coffee shop. The bar is bare boarded with tiles around the bar. It is fairly narrow, opening up a little beyond the bar, where there is a dartboard. The rest of the decor, I can only describe as fairly eclectic.
LPs are available to play (£4 each of 3 for £10) but it was also open mic night. But there didn't seem much interest and the guy running it was playing along by himself near the entrance. For a Good Beer Guide listed pub, the ale range was disappointing - Morland Old Speckled Hen & Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter. A third handpull had a turned Dark Star Hophead clip. Weston's Old Rosie was my choice from a very small box behind the bar. The number of cider pumpclips on a door behind the bar suggests a much more adventurous selection in days gone by.
Bar snacks such as nachos and cheesy fries were being promoted. I also spotted a list of pizzas. Hot drinks are available to drink in or take away. There is some outdoor seating on the pedestrianised street to the front.
I quite liked the decor and atmosphere of this place but the drinks range was disappointing. Perhaps there is a better range during the summer months.

The Star used to be a very traditional local’s pub. Back in the early 1980s when I began to drink in Ryde it was very much an older man’s venue and therefore my age group were not made welcome. After a long closure it reopened as a pub coffee house hybrid. The bar is one long room scattered with tables and chairs. Lighting is kept very low and the walls are adorned with art and music memorabilia giving it the feeling of the sort of place the Doors would hang out. Strangely it still doesn’t feel very welcoming. The bar staff seem to be more interested in the locals and not occasional visitors like myself. On this visit I chose the Harvey’s Sussex Best - one of my favourite beers. It was pretty dire and I nearly sent it back but the bar staff had disappeared. I may give this pub another go but maybe not. It probably just isn’t my sort of place.

Popped in on Sunday, they had a jazz trio playing to a packed house. Rather squashed, yet the barman/landlord made some room for us and we felt very welcome by the patrons. Harveys Sussex on tap was on top form. There are a few Craft beers that I didn't recognise. The toilets were amazingly clean, just thought it deserved a mention. We had an olive and cheese platter, and I really wish we had discovered this venue much earlier in our stay.
