It's been almost 10 years since my last visit to Ryde. So, I returned to visit a couple of venues currently in the Good Beer Guide, which I had previously missed.
Harry's Bar is part of what seemed like a fairly plush hotel. The bar can be found to the left of the hotel and it has its own separate entrance via a corridor, just to the left of the restaurant. The bar is quite nicely made out but all tables were taken. I had to resort to Harry's Snug further down the corridor behind the bar itself. The snug had a stone floor and some attractive leaded and stained glass windows. A TV playing music destroyed the atmosphere somewhat. There is an outdoor yard to the rear.
There are 3 handpulls on the bar with the pub having a strong connection with the Heritage Brewery. Their Charrington IPA was on, alongside a couple from Burton Bridge - Burton Porter & Mumford Mild. The mild was just about my favourite beer of a day out on the island. I enquired about a CAMRA discount. The bar staff knew the price of a pint with the discount but had to work out the full price to calculate the percentage and then apply that to the half I ordered. It seemed to cause much confusion!
Well worth a visit if in Ryde.

This is a small hotel bar in what feels a little like an underground location but is actually at the front of the hotel on the ground floor overlooking the Esplanade and bus station. It is nicely furnished and has a cosy feel. The bar staff are efficient and welcoming. Food is sometimes available depending on the season and day of week. In the winter I wouldn’t depend on it. The Royal Esplanade Hotel is owned by Planning Solutions Ltd who also own the Heritage Brewing Company. This explains why Masterpiece and other HBC beers are regularly on tap in Harry’s Bar. I’ve always thought the beers are okay but not in prime condition. However they are still better than most offerings in Ryde. Probably my favourite pub/bar in Ryde.

An old-fashioned rectangular lounge bar in a slightly tired hotel on the seafront, with sea views (if you can see past the buses, trains and hovercraft). It has own entrance to the left of the building. I was quite surprised to find a couple of Heritage Brewing Company beers labelled on the handpumps in the shape of Charrington IPA and Masterpiece, but sadly they were out of use at the time. I will have to revisit and see what they replace them with if HBC closes.
