Backstreet Batemans in the attractive Wormgate area which is a bit of a slog away from the immediate town centre. There's been a fairly awful ‘grey gloop’ refit which has mercifully stopped halfway through the front bar, the left hand side retains untampered full-length light varnished tongue and groove wood. Unfortunately, when sitting, you face the bar which looks like a refitted battleship, albeit one with hand saws hanging off it. There’s a raised room via stairs off left which looked like it might be a decent poke. Three Batemans ales on; the Mild was fair (NBSS 3) and I did get a warning from the barman prior that it had been on a little while. GBG listed but I preferred the other Bateman’s place I tried, the Kings. It just felt too gloomy in here.

The Carpenters Arms is a Bateman’s pub with an L-shaped serving counter on the rear wall to the right where four hand pumps are supported. One was unused which left Last Post, Victory Ale and XB as the cask options alongside standard and premium keg. The right-hand side of the pub is wooden floored and the left is tiled, and there’s additional raised seating in the left rear. At the back is a pool table and dartboard with more seating. The signed electric guitar and oddly hung signed symbol on the wooden walls give away the fact that regular live music is held here, but it was quiet other than some 1970s background music during my recent Wednesday evening visit. The service was friendly and atmosphere welcoming so I decided to have a half of Victory and Last Post, the latter being my preferred ale. I’d pop back in of passing.

Not a bad Batemans pub, with the bar to the right hand side. I had XXXB which was OK. Strange area to the left which looks as though there used to be a pool table in it, but no longer.
