Dating from at least 1788 and quite possibly the same building, this was the White Hart (with a gin distillery, hence the name to the parapet), Macbeth from 1978, briefly Hoxton Distillery in 2005 then back to Macbeth from 2006. Or so it would seem.
It had until recently been closed, before that more of a live music venue, possibly with an entrance fee. The two reviews – obviously the most recent – still chime: the shabby chic interior is bare boarded with white walls alongside red wainscoting with an orange Anaglypta ceiling. The bar is modern with a humble bar back, possibly of some vintage then an open kitchen for the Iberian food. Furniture is mismatched, traditional pub stuff, then décor in the form of bric-a-brac such as hanging plates, brewery and spirit mirrors, bottles – some wax encrusted – one of two nods to the past being a divider with leaded stained-glass infill. However, the real star of the show – which garners the pub a CAMRA * for being of Special National Historic Importance – is the stunning frieze depicting Macbeth’s Banquet, Act III, Scene IV from Shakespeare’s play (see photo and the pub’s website).
The crowd was young, trendy and in good numbers, especially for a Sunday at 8.15pm, making for a decent buzz, many outside using the barrels-as-tables.
Aside from multifizz and an unclipped pump, there was cask in the form of Bass, just £2.50 a pint and…well…Bass, served by a coolly efficient barman.
Far better than the Howl at the Moon and toothless Red Lion that bookend this place, after a while it grew on me though of course would be improved with a decent ale, but ultimately, it really is a metonym for Hoxton and Shoreditch.

A large single roomed pub, an open kitchen adjoins the bar apparently specialising in Iberian food. There are a couple of handpumps with just Bass available, decently priced for London at £4.90.An interesting exterior despite the current black colouration but nothing much else going for the pub.

Alternative Music venue which mainly promotes emerging young bands.
Inside it is a large music room, a downstairs dance floor room with DJ and what is billed as a roof garden, but in reality is a small outside space for smokers.
The decor is shabby, but on purpose. However, this being Hoxton, the usual young trendy clientele are not.
