Always a source of mystery to my young self as I must have been driven past it hundreds of times. Back then it looked plush and upmarket with red curtains and sodium lights. Having finally made it in I find that's all gone, it's been subject to a mid-2000s refit with all the trimmings - light varnished beams, pine laminate floor, tub chairs, shiny wallpaper, plank bar with copper trim, mirrored rear wall. They were also playing 5ive, just to fully round-off the experience. Of more interest is the impressive rear garden. Four pumps with three cask ales and Sam's cider. My Sharps Atlantic was suffering from a lack of turnover but was drinkable (NBSS 2.5). Some wally didn't pay chef overtime to work Easter Saturday afternoon so around 300 quid’s worth of custom came in and walked back out over the 20 minutes I was ensconced. 5.5

Recently re-opened after a spell of closure, this has had a chequered history of late with several changes of ownership over the last few years. According to reports in the local press, there was much community involvement with the latest attempt to get it re-opened with villagers assisting with the renovation and so on, although it is not actually community owned as far as I am aware. There is a good sized garden at the back, and this included a wooden structure which I took to be another bar counter for use in the warmer weather, as well as a covered area to the right which included a wood burning stove.

Internally it’s now all one single, open plan room with the decor style being something of a mix of contemporary and rustic. Sanded wooden boards were on the floor with the walls being a mixture of whitewashed plasterwork and further sanded wooden boards on the lower part of the walls. A few small pictures were scattered around, including some old black and white photographs of the pub. Elsewhere was some floral wallpaper and mirrored tiles down at one end which was a bit of a feature. A few chunky wooden beams were on the ceiling, and lighting was provided by industrial looked caged light that had been string around. A chalkboard advertised the forthcoming Six Nations matches, but there was no sign of a screen on our visit.

The menu offered a concise selection of “pub grub” dishes such as Pie of the Week, Gammon Egg & Chips, (vegan) curry and so on, as well as a good selection of pizzas and burgers. My Fish & Chips was a decent portion with a crispy batter, and came complete with some very chunky skin-on chips and mushy peas.

Beers on tap were Wye Valley HPA, Butcombe Original and Robinson’s Overhang IPA, whilst the ciders were Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Haze and Stan’s Big Apple. Overall, whilst this doesn’t perhaps have quite the same cosy charm that it once did, I thought they done a pretty sympathetic job of the refurbishment, the food was good value and tasty and both barmaids friendly and helpful.

Revisited today since being in Neil's and Olivia's as part of The Royal Oaks, Horfield ownership portfolio and all I can say is what a transformation. The whole upstairs has been opened up as a restaurant leaving the downstairs as a pub where you can order food to a table but no tables were laid up for food and it appears from signage that it's he way it will remain which is a breath of fresh air given so many rural pub go the overkill food route.

The old car park to the right which never ever felt like it should be for customers to park under previous owners in is now being utilised for what it is intended for.

There where 4 hand pumps on. Decor wise has seen an mixture of sea lamps and nautical against handrailing formed tables with slate tops downstairs with a mixture of tall stools for people to sit at and traditional tables and chairs with stools for those who prefer to be nearer to ground level.

I've always liked this pub since going there in 1996 for Sunday lunches when living as a student in Clifton and given the new lease of life will more than likely return.
