One of a cluster of four pubs located around the small town square (or more accurately, town triangle), it looks to be an attractive and traditional stone-built pub, with a few hanging baskets along the front and a couple of bench seats outside, although there is, I believe, also a garden at the rear.

Internally it consists of a couple of interconnected snugs to the right, and a larger L-shape room with the bar counter to the left. Décor wise it’s a little unusual whilst still managing to look fairly traditional with a red painted boards on the ceiling, black flooring and black painted wallpaper on the top part of the walls, with black wood panelling down below and a small brick fireplace. If that sounds all a bit dark and dismal, it wasn’t and was actually very pleasant. A multitude of flags covered much of the ceiling, whilst there were plenty of old black and white photographs on the wall, along with other bits and pieces including brewery mirrors, a life buoy, some fire fighting equipment, shields and nautical charts. The snugs to the right felt a little more contemporary perhaps but were still broadly similar in terms of style with black slate style tiling on the floor, white plasterwork on the upper part of the walls, a small fireplace off to one side in the front snug with a TV screen above, whilst the rear snug had a large stone fireplace with an unusual blue guitar in the alcove next to it.

Beers on tap were all from St Austell with their Tribute, Proper Job, Cornish Best, Hicks and Mena Boo. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold and Cornish Rattler. Overall, a lovely little pub and well worth checking out.

A real character pub, this (CAMRA NI **). Side corridor with a C shape bar off left with a wonky black bitumen floor, black walls - a mix of wainscoting and anaglypta - with a red ceiling. Celt flags on said ceiling and lots of local ephemera on the walls, from the local tin miners and fishermen to the fire brigade. Net curtains as well, don’t see those very often now. Upright piano also. GBG listed, there were four pumps with three St Austell ales. My first choice was held up to the light by the young barman and deemed unacceptable, the follow-up of Cornish Best was on great form if a bit chilly (NBSS 4) - would have been nudging a 5 if warmer. A proper must-visit if you're down this way, real quality.

So wanted to come in. I knew about the electric fence. I was unsure what the rules were about Tier 2 people getting a drink in Tier 1.

I've been in cornwall a week now and its different in every place. My favourite was in St Ives, where the barman was allowing people to sit outside with food if you were in Tier 2 but turning people away for drinks only if from Tier 2. The couple after us were from Wales. Who were let in without a problem for drinks - despite no alcohol being sold in any welsh pub.

Its hilarious but this landlord was enforcing the rules as he saw fit - as its wet led, so its only for Tier 1 people. He's gone to lengths to explain this to the media in Russia and China... as I found out when looking at Twitter indignantly on my return to our holiday cottage.

I've been here before, so I knew it was a prime location for real ale and music evenings.

I'll try again when I have been vaccinated :-)
