The original building was built for the Commercial Bank of Scotland in the 1920’s, which later became part of RBS via mergers. The building was acquired in July 1996 by the pub chain Pitcher & Piano to be converted into their first venue outside of London. Then operating as the horror-themed pub Frankenstein and later Horton's Bar & Kitchen. Glendola Leisure Group has invested £1.5 million in refurbishing the interior into a 160 seat for brew house Shilling Brewing Company in June 2016. A specialist bar that brews its own craft beer. The owner Waxy O’Connors at 44 West George Street, which also operates Alston Bar & Beef restaurant Gordon Street and Gordon St Coffee shop in the city, has created twenty new jobs at the venue. The bank’s original foot-thick steel vault door was kept intact, leading downstairs into a private tasting room and the cellar. Instead of tucking the brewery away out of sight, the system is split across two levels. On the ground floor, two prominent copper storage vessels sit directly behind the bar on an elevated gantry. The venue features a unique layout of eight high-set brewing tuns/tanks mounted along the wall near the ceiling line. The rest of the heavy infrastructure—including the main fermentation tanks—is housed downstairs in the basement cellar. At the time of visiting late Sept 2026 the beers on the bar were – Session IPA from Stewart Brewing – Jungle Hijinxs from Cromarty Brewing – Funk Weapon from Holy Goat Brewing – Machine Gun Lager from Shilling – Thistly Cross Cider – Haze Halo IPA from 71 Brewing – Hawaiian Shirt IPA from Tennessee Hills Distillery – Year 1 Foundations from Vault City Brewing – Paolozzi from Edinburgh Beer Factory – Nelson IPA from Moonwake – Coney Hazy Session IPA from Brew in York – Sanctum West Coast IPA from Otherworld Brewing – Kool Runnings from Cromarty Brewing – Tennent lager from the Wellpark Brewery – Cast Iron Soul Baltic Porter from 71 Brewing – BA NYX Historic Porter from Otherworld Brewery is a 7.1% ABV dark, rich historical porter inspired by 19th-century brewing recipes – Cresta Stout from Tempest Brewing - Sabra Cadabra a Vanilla Stout from Holy Goat Brewing – Maelstrom DIPA from Otherworld Brewing – Tenements Lager from Simple Things Fermentations – Karaoke Amarillo Pale from Weekend Project.
