As the British Lion, this Cockney boozer as was has existed here since at least the mid-19th century, the current ex-Whitbread structure rebuilt in 1888, run by Terry and Angela one-hundred years later; when I photographed it in May 2011, it was a resolutely locals’ pub with punter having a fag outside (see photo from May 2011).
This place closed in 2012 to become Sager + Wilde in 2013, the pair in question possibly coming from California? Now very much a wine bar with bottled beers, you can easily part with well over 100 of your finest folding notes for an ‘arris, topping out at monkey and ton which must prove popular with the substantial surrounding Muslim community.
It’s small inside, the modern bar placed to the right-hand wall, globe lights above, with much white painted bare brick and a dark Anaglypta ceiling, much light coming from the candles on tables.
There’s no draught beer so I didn’t have a drink, the customers much younger and more fashionable than me, hard though that may be to believe.

No draught beer. Really interesting of beers by the bottle, including offerings by Braybrooke, Harbour and Macintosh.
Corner venue with illuminating windows on front and left-hand sides. Bar counter on the right-hand wall with tall stool seating at the bar counter. Bare boarded with some marble topped tables along the left-hand side and then some tall tables at the rear of the venue. There is a drinking ledge in the front window with tall stools. Not a beer destination but 100% a go to wine bar in this part of East London.
