Located in a very remote location at the end of a no through road, it’s an idyllic spot with the pub situated on the banks of the River Teign and just next to the attractive Fingle Bridge from which the pub takes it’s name. There is plenty of outside seating on a couple of different levels to make the most of the setting, and indeed this seems to be the main attraction with the interior of the pub being quite disappointing in comparison. Table service seems to be the order of the day here, with a “Please wait to be seated” lectern at the entrance way to the garden, so you can’t even get in to the pub grounds unescorted, never mind the pub itself. We were eating, so it wasn’t an issue, although whether you would be allowed to approach the bar if you only wanted a drink, I’m not sure.

Internally it’s split across two rooms, with the one to the left looking to be more geared up for dining and with a mobile carvery counter at the back. Décor wise it seemed a bit more like a village hall than a pub, with some sort of suspended ceiling tiles, beige carpet on the floor and drape curtains at the windows. It really was a real let down in comparison with the beautiful setting outside. The other room to the right was a little better, although still felt distinctly lacking in atmosphere. There were a few wooden beams on the ceiling, old church pews for seating, an old black fireplace off to the right and one small area opposite the bar counter that was actually quite attractive with an exposed stone chimney breast and more old timberwork either side of it.

Beers on tap were Hanlon’s Devon Born Ale and Teignworthy Neap Tide, whilst a further pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were Sandford Orchard’s Devon Mist, and some fruit concoction who’s name escapes me. Overall, great if you want to sit outside and admire the view, but I wouldn’t bother just for the pub.
