A wonderful country pub, currently run by the community on a volunteer basis. There is a large car park at the side, but not much by way of garden. Inside is mostly as described by Quinno, below, though now there is a raised area at the side which houses a small library, a selection of board games, a dart board and a pool table. The beams and inglenook are still there. On entry we were welcomed by a barman who made us feel instantly at home, offered our dogs treats and was happy to chat and tell us about the pub’s contribution to village life. Food was freshly cooked and reasonably priced. There were two ales on draught, Otter Amber and Exeter Avocet, both in perfect condition. There was also a dry pump on the bar, plus a keg selection of Guinness, Moretti, Powderkeg Lager and Devon Red. There were also 3 real ciders from Lilley’s, Sandford Orchards and Ventins. It’s well off the beaten track but well worth the effort to seek out.

‘Chocolate box’ thatched roofed gastropub buried away in the countryside. Raised grassed beer garden with cracking views across the valley. Tastefully done-out inside, though it’s a bit too much on the open-plan side to be anything particularly memorable. Slate floor, jumbo inglenook fireplace with a stove, black beams. Has won numerous Gastropub awards and these are proudly displayed. Friendly landlord who wasn't fussed about us just drinking. Three ales on; Hanlons Yellohammer, Otter Ale and Otter Amber with Butcombe turned round. The Amber was a super drop too so I was pretty impressed with the whole set-up, really. 7.5
