Situated in the village of Birstall, this pub has more limited opening hours than many local pubs, only opening in the evening early in the week.
The interior has some fairly varied decor. Flooring is a mixture of carpet, tiling and bare boards. Some fairly garish wallpaper features near to the toilets. There is a piano in one corner and there is some artwork for sale.
The bar has 4 handpulls. Marston's Pedigree is the regular ale. Two of the other 3 handpulls were clipped with Beermats Onomatobeer & Charnwood Loki. Ciders were Orchard Pig Reveller & 3 fruity ones which I didn't note. Camden Stout was on keg. When choosing, one local turned the two guest beer clips round and advised me not to try either. The barman quickly explained that they were beers that had gone down well at a recent beer festival. I wondered why if they'd gone down well they were still on, but they'd re-ordered them due to popular demand. Deciding to take the barman's word over the local's, I really enjoyed the Beermats beer and returned to the bar to try the Charnwood beer. That was equally good.
Music was playing during my visit, with a number of Oasis tracks. Both children and dogs are allowed and quite a few of the latter were present, all well behaved. A wifi password is available behind the bar. Food is not served but pies, pasties and sausage rolls are available as snacks from a hot cabinet at the end of the bar. Outdoor seating is available on a rear patio, with some tables undercover.
I thought the beers I tried here were the best conditioned of the day. Easily deserving of its place in the Good Beer Guide.

A quick revisit prior to The Big Family Festive Meal at the sister pub down the road. Much better this time, though that was partly down to the young barman who conscientiously poured through all the ales when I ordered a couple 30 mins after opening (his female companion had already served at least one prior…). Four on with a pair of proper small brewery beers in Beermats Diplomat Stout and Handy Andy Bloke Down The Pub. The two we had were fairly good, NBSS 3 and 3.5. Question now is whether this is a classic ‘cask good when weather not warm’ place. I’ll try again in summer. 6.5

More a local than its sister pub (White Horse) down the road. Not much to write home about inside, though tidy enough. There was a fridge of pub snacks (scotch eggs, sausage rolls) which looked good and there were a few people in as well so a decent atmosphere. Three cask on with a decent selection in Pedi, Charnwood Vixen and Brunswick Usual, the latter of which was on the cusp of turning (NBSS 1.5) unfortunately. Decided that I couldn’t be arsed to quibble as I needed to head off shortly anyway. A shame about the duff pint, as they’ve set themselves up to be worth a visit. Maybe I’ll give them a second chance at some point. Rated 5.5
