The Rock Cafe & Bar was my final stop of the evening in Leicestershire. It looks like this bar is located in the end house of a terrace and I wasn't initially sure it was open. It turned out to be the best range of beers and ciders I'd seen all day.

The interior is long and thin. The bar can be found not far from the entrance against the right-hand wall. The cafe part is to the rear and serves daytime breakfasts and snacks. Hops above the bar give the place a traditional feel. Seating is on casks. Dogs are welcome.

All beers and ciders are listed on Untappd with a screen behind the bar. For my visit, both of the regular cask ales (Bang The Elephant Blue Boar & New Bristol The Joy of Sesh) were on. Guests were New Bristol Biscotti Stout, Three Acre Sundowner, Coley's One Red Candle & North Riding US Session (V125) Chinook Bru-1. Ciders were Lilley's Sunset, Nuclear Mango & Guava & Nuclear Berry, Gwatkin Yarlington Mill & Rich's Farmhouse Dry. In addition, there was a good selection of craft beer in cans near the entrance.

Another interesting feature is a wall of self-serve taps just beyond the bar. The friendly barman explained that the pub can get very busy at peak times and some customers wanted a self-service option. As such, if you fancy any of the keg beers, you can help yourself after providing card payment.

I enjoyed my half of the Nuclear Berry cider, which was a new one for me. I'd loved to have been able to try some of the beers too but time was no longer on my side. Whilst this place is a little off the beaten track, the excellent cask ale and cider range here swung it for me, making it my favourite pub of the day.

A rarity - a cafe bar that actually functions as one with a 50/50 split (bar at front, café at rear). Long and narrow inside and it feels a bit like a cross between a seaside café and a cellar bar. Not much to set the pulse racing, décor-wise, but nice enough. Run by the same people as the Blue Boar in LE1 and Ale Stone in Aylestone and it shares similar beers. Inevitably GBG listed with an eclectic line-up of beers and ciders, Untappd tells me that I had (or shared with the missus) casks of Then Maybe You Shouldn’t Be Living Here by Lenton Lane Brewery (NBSS 3) and Victorian Ruby Mild by Ashover Brew Co (3) alongside cans from the interestingly-stocked fridge of Scoundrel (2023) by Emperor's Brewery and Bailey’s Mocha Choca Flaked Truffle Stout by New Bristol Brewery. The ‘just about’ GBG cask scores seemed to be down a combination of the interior being stiflingly hot and a lack of constant turnover over the 8 sticks, the place has little ventilation. The craftykeg is self-serve via £10 voucher purchased at the bar. Odd one, the missus liked it but I felt that the generous focus on cask ale didn’t really work - do the locals really drink that much? Might be worth spending a few quid on some decent aircon, maybe. 6.5
