My first visit here for a number of years; it used to be a Courage pub when I lived in Lancaster, which would have meant John Smiths Magnet if it had any cask beers at all in the 1980s. On this occasion there were Timothy Taylor Boltmaker and Wainwright. The Boltmaker was very good (NBSS 3.5). Trying to remember what the pub was like 40 years ago, I came up with a complete blank apart from being convinced that the bar had been on the opposite side of the room. Probably complete garbage.

can be very much hit and miss for atmosphere this place. I've often walked in to find it completely dead and I wonder if the regular event nights (folk music usually) are keeping it afloat. I like it as a pub but not that much. there are definitely better places in Lancaster.

I had a slightly different problem to Mr Quinno when one of the 'stronger' beers was only being served in half's. Just bought 2 half's then. Still its a very nice pub.

Located on the recently-gentrified St Georges Quay (not easy to find for out-of-towners) and close to Lancaster City FC (Giant Axe), I popped in here on the strength of it GBG 2012 entry. It’s a long narrow knocked through room with the bar at back left rear. It looks like a recent refurb has taken place and now there’s fresh wooden flooring, black and white maritime pics on the wall and light wood wall panelling at the rear, where sports TV is located. Five pumps with four ales on – A Howells Xmas Beer , GK Ruddles, GK IPA and an Adnams Xmas beer at 7.5%. I rather fancied a half of the Adnams but the barman told me it was only available in pints – so much for responsible drinking! As I was off to the footy in 30 minutes I went for a half of the Howells which was extremely good though I am sure RogerB would be tutting. The barman was friendly and there was a nice feel to the place, especially the seating by the bay window with views over the water where I parked myself. Extensive pub grub, a decent wine list, CAMRA gumpf and a quizzer completed the picture.

Despite the batty policy regarding the high abv beer I’d be happy to pop in here again and would certainly use it if I were living locally.
