This street corner pub with a Courage Cockrel sign was featured in 2020 on Tom Kerridge's Saving Britains Pubs. The upshot was a refurb with the front saloon discovering it's parquet floor, and a new set of furniture, most un pub like but colourful, leaving the impression of a cafe .The bar here is keg only and cash is prefered,I went for a Leffe Blonde.
The rear room is vast with a long bar but it was stripped out and empty, maybe waiting for an event and I was ushered out when I went looking for the gents which I had missed in the front bar.
The flatscreen was on showing the last knockings of the FA Cup but the pub was empty,I thought for a moment it was closed .Myself and another punter watched the match ,then an irishman in a Millwall shirt drifted in ,but compared with the nearby heaving pubs this one was deserted.
It is owned by a caribbean couple who want to maintain their culture, but on my visit there was no sign of their cooking. The unfriendly redirection away from the large bar area made me feel uncomfortable and there was no sign of any domino players featured large in the TV shows.
Once the media have moved on ,possibly this pub is struggling and there is nothing to tempt me to revisit. Maybe it's a local pub for local people.

On leaving Nunhead station I mistakenly headed in the wrong direction and on the heavens opening I dived in here. No real ale, I had a half of something a bit rubbish and fizzy, there are two large if fairly spartan rooms, one has a pool table and TV showing the darts at the time. A larger rear room has the keg pumps and also has a stage at the far end. The bar counter is in glass blocks, some "tables" are formed from packing boxes, in fairness the lady who served me was very friendly but I felt she was surprised to see a customer early in the day. Caribbean food served, I suspect this is a pub that serves the black community but no feeling of being intrusive and as it should be. No frills but ok.

The sign on the door, and the adverts around the tiny patio area, proclaiming “swift money transfers here” was a clue. How many pubs do you know that arrange money transfers overseas? Inside there were a couple of chaps sitting at the bar, no real ale, and an overpowering smell of spicy foreign food. It looked pretty dismal and dingy, and I didn’t stop for a drink.
