Society Rooms is a Wetherspoons with a central bar area where the serving counter runs up the right whilst facing high tables up the centre. Standard tables are found at the rear in a ‘dining area’ that is faced by a large kitchen hatch. In the front left is a raised seating area and to the right are a few tables that lead to a large open plan seating area in the right-hand side of the building. In the right rear is an enclosed beer garden full of seating.
On the bar, in amongst the usual array of standard and premium keg, are two banks of five hand pumps that were drawing the three nationals plus Moorhouse’s Blonde, Phoenix Brewery’s Wobbly Bob, Acorn Brewery’s Darkness, Bank Top’s Palomino Rising, Northern Whisper Brewing’s Oppenchops (decent), Purity Brewing’s Ubu and Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery’s Radical. The service was very quick, in fact I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many Spoons staff on duty. They were almost fighting to serve! This isn’t the most attractive JDW, but don’t let the exterior put you off because it’s not bad.

Initially feels like a relatively small Spoons over two floors until you clock the sizeable extension off right as you enter. Simple modern interior in white and red with some mid-colour wood trim. Four guest cask on, my Lancaster Red was fine (NBSS 3) maybe a little towards the barrel end. Apparently the pub name comes from it being a former Co-Op. Decent Spoons which seemed well-run. 6.5

This Spoons has been extended into the adjacent building on the right, which is now used as a dining area. They have taken out the first floor of this building and is now a large open space with an impressive view up to the roof, along with the super high bare brick chimney breast, with large canopy over the fireplace. The main part of the pub also had a open plan front lounge area with two large red painted columns. The bar area was tucked away under the first floor and had banks of six large intrusive looking plastered bulkheads, housing aircon units. The décor was predominantly red and off white painted walls. Two sets of five handpumps with all the usual suspects, apart from Reedley Hallows Clausing Time and Acorn Cracker at £2.15 a pint, usual Xmas muck for this time of year.

Another 'spoons breakfast visit. Like most of my early visits, this did not let me down. Standard size breakfast, a cappuccino (+ free top up) and a pint of the local Millstone Tiger Rut which was excellent (but no free top up!). This 'spoons seemed quite large. Looking at previous photos it seems that it has been extended into the next building on the right. I score it 8(B) for my breakfast visit. I would average it out if it got a much lower score for an evening visit.

The Society Rooms is smaller than many JDWs with the bar on the right and a patio / garden at the rear. It was fairly quiet on my early Saturday evening visit.
The ten hand pumps had three Available Soon, two GK beers, four festival beers and Oakham Green Devil IPA. I went for the Adnam's Sloe Porter and the Green Devil IPA both at the festival price of £2.45 and in great condition.
It thought this was a good Spoons.

A fairly standard JDW with regards to the decor. A two level pub converted from a Co-op, hence the name. Good service at the bar and a good range of guest ales on the 10 handpumps made this pub stand out a bit from the JDW norm. Both pints I had were in good nick as well. Pretty busy at 6 on a Friday with a very friendly atmosphere. Well worth a visit when in Stalybridge.

There was no customary wait to be served here, which seems to be the norm for most wetherspoons pubs. They had 8 real ales on of which i imbibed in a couple of excellent pints of Exmoor Beast, which was a full bodied dark Porter (6.6 abv). Found it ok in here and thought the furnishings were an improvement on a quite a number of 'Spoons' outlets i had visited.
