Forgotten that I did this one years ago. So today we have a GBG listed Spoons and to be fair they take their cask seriously in here with a blackboard in the middle of the bar showcasing the offering of five (as well as four ciders). Not as clever as the Hatchet (Newbury) in terms of having a wide style range but no arguments with my Bateman's XXXB which was a solid NBSS 3.5. A quiet JDW despite the muted football, most of the punters were either reading or quietly chatting; though its proximity to the notorious Queen Street means that probably isn’t true when there’s an event on at the Millennium. Looks small in the ground floor but there is also an upstairs bar (unexplored). Decor is nicely trad, - dark varnished wood and a sightly grey/white paint job to brighten things up a little. Food was good and served-up by friendly staff who looked like they actually enjoyed their jobs. Best in show I think and I’d default this as a Cardiff crawl staple.

November 2015
Two floored standard JDW at the base of an uninspiring 60's block. Decently decorated and felt pretty welcoming on Saturday evening, no obvious chav elements. The upstairs room has a glass tile floor section to see downstairs, not one for those with queasy stomachs. My pint of Purity MOB was in excellent shape. Unlike the reviewer below, I’m inclined to say this is the possibly the best of the central Cardiff Wetherspoons, it’s a bit smaller and more homely than the Gatekeeper. Left satisfied, if somewhat lacking in notes. Rated 7.5

Above average branch of Wetherspoon's just off one of Cardiff's main shopping drags. We didn't stay inside for long, as it was warm and crowded, instead preferring to take a table on the pavement at the front of the pub. Although, the interior looked pretty much like any 'spoon's.

The usual real ales were on - Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharp's Doom Bar. Guest ales were Purple Moose Dark Side of the Moose, Ilkley Blonde, Evan Evans Warrior, Elgood's Cambridge Bitter & Mumbles Lifesaver. There was also a good selection of boxed ciders in the fridges - Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon, Weston's Old Rosie, Broadoak Moonshine & Abrahall's AM.

In hindsight, this was probably the best pub we visited in Cardiff throughout the day, with a varied ale and cider range and competitive pricing. It just lacks any sort of character, as you would expect.

A good solid Spoons with a reasonable selection of beers and far enough off 'the circuit' to avoid the worst excesses. No surprises and firmly in the 'does what is says on the tin' camp.
