A stones throw from Greene King’s brewery and the cathedral so it’s close to good and evil. Its an old building outside and still retaining some older features inside. L shaped with a neat taproom across the front and a sitting / dining area in the longer modern arm of the L, this leads out to an outside covered space and toilets. It has a long side room on the right as well. There’s a counter in both rooms, three pulls in the front with Abbot and IPA, the third with some advertising screed about IPA and no the words ‘making love in a punt’ do not appear. The other bar has three pulls IPA, a summer special and an own badged beer, possibly “Hardy & Hansons” which I understand is often used for this purpose. I didn’t take to this one - poor beer, overloud piped music and slightly iffy staff didn’t enhance the visit.

Strongers . left this review about Dog & Partridge
I recently spent a night using the accommodation at the Grade II listed Dog & Partridge, so I parked in the small car park at the rear, reserved for hotel guests only, before entering the split-level back garden. To the left are lines of covered tables and to the raised right are some tables and chairs and the entrance to the hotel. After checking in I wandered up the road to the Rose & Crown before coming back to the pub, this time entering through the main entrance that opens into a bare boarded bar where seating across the front windows is faced by a front facing serving counter that supports three hand pumps and a premium keg range. A second counter on the L-shaped bar supports three more hand pumps while facing standing room to the right before an old and large exposed brick chimney breast with fireplaces that face the counter to the left and a sunken parquet floored seating area to the front. Behind the chimney, in the right rear corner, is raised seating where breakfast was served the following morning. More raised seating is found across the rear where the back garden can be accessed. This is probably the closest pub to the brewery with it being just over the road, you can certainly smell it, so I was surprised to find only four GK options across the six hand pumps, those being IPA, Abbot, Spring Break and Dog & Partridge Ale. I’m not a big fan of the IPA, but I thought it must be as good as it going to get in here so went for a pint, meh. The service was very friendly and the £10 breakfast was good value for money, but I don’t think I’ll be returning now that I’ve visited.

A large pub adjacent to the Greene King Brewery, I assume this pretty much serves as the brewery tap with the other nearby pub that carries that official designation seeming to be closed whenever we went past.
It’s quite large inside, being divided in to a number of different areas and seems to have something of a chain like feel to it. Much of the décor is contemporary with Farrow & Ball brown paintwork and a sanded wooden floor, but then there are also some areas of exposed brickwork, for example. A large brick fireplace was opposite the bar counter, although this did not look as though it were used. A snug at the front of the pub had much wood panelling on the walls, making it somewhat reminiscent of a hotel drawing room. A number of old black and white photos of the brewery were on the walls. Service seemed a bit hit and miss with some staff serving hot drinks and others seeming to scurry about without actually achieving anything.
The menu looked to be a mass produced laminated affair and consisted of a number of sections such as burgers, grills, steaks, chicken, pub classics, etc., with the latter including options such as sausage and mash, hunter’s chicken, scampi & chips, lasagne, beef & ale pie, chicken tikka masala, etc. Most of the main courses were priced somewhere around £9, although many were also available as part of a “2 for £10” deal. A plate of flapjacks was on the bar counter.
Beers on tap were all from Greene King as might be expected with their IPA, London Glory and Old Speckled Hen, whilst a fourth pump for St Edmunds appeared to have run out. Another bank of four pumps around the corner were, I assumed, duplicates, but I did not inspect them so there may have been a further selection available. Ciders meanwhile were Aspall’s Suffolk and Rekorderlig Raspberry.
