Oh dear, how sad is this place. Such a magnificent space and such potential but sadly that of yesteryear. It is well described below with some lovely “arts and crafts” wallpaper above the panelled area in my chosen seating position on the left hand side of the pub. Saying that I wasn’t spoilt for choice of where to sit, the large interior only had a handful of punters in on my arrival a bit before 7.45pm. The venue was totally devoid of any atmosphere. Indeed there was more atmosphere in the unoccupied small table area at the front with the pedestrian walkway running between the the terrace and the front of the pub.

The beer choice was equally devoid of anything interesting. Two hand pumps unclipped that I suspect have not seen any beer flow through them for many a year. Craft choices (if you can call them that) were Neck Oil and Brixton Reliance Pale Ale plus a pint of Guinness that I enjoyed way more in the previous Irish bar and some bland lager options.

The place has a fish and chip restaurant under same ownership at the side of the pub with a serving hatch into the pub. I opted for a portion of chips. I had hope this would be a modest redeeming feature. They were clearly from a frozen bag of chips and were over cooked and utterly dry. How do you f**k up a portion of chips if you are a F&C shop - well this venue can and that says everting you need to know about it.

A mid-19th century pub renamed the Kilburn Arms in 2018, this is listed on CAMRA’s Heritage Inventory, being of Regional Importance.
The pub still subjects customers to Track and Trace which I studiously ignored. There are indeed some very elegant cut and etched glass screens along with a very ornate bar back with a moulded cornice punctuated by a few columns with Corinthian capitals, painted gold.
The floor is modern boarded and walls are sea green to the dado, white on up then a pale grey Anaglypta ceiling. Some lighting is modern with lamps resembling armillary spheres. Furniture is conventional to the main floor with more ‘clubby’ upholstered booth-style seating partitioned by the aforementioned screens. There’s little décor that I could see, just a few prints and a dressed shop mannequin presiding over a selection of board games, which looked a bit naff. Tables have little glass vases on them, each containing a small blossom. Somewhat incongruously, Run DMC’s Hard Times wafted over the gramophone – what the Dickens? Customers were obviously locals and just six in this large space, making for little ambience.
There were two pumps without clips, then just Eurofizz, Lagunitas or Neck Oil at the utterly insulting £6.40 and served in a glass covered with little red, blue and yellow dots; it looked like something a small child would use.
This pub may have been very fine in its day, though I suspect it’s lost much of its grandeur. However, it’s the obscene prices charged in the Kilburn Arms that would ensure I wouldn’t come here again.

There’s no real ale here, and there was no sign of any food when I visited on Friday lunchtime.

This is another magnificent old Victorian pub that would once have been the cultural and entertainment focus of the surrounding area – perhaps it still is. Judging by the fleur de lys engraved in stone on the parapet, the Prince of Wales must be its original name. The main entrance now is into the centre of the pub, through doors that still contain the original Saloon Bar cut glass glazing, and flanked by a couple of rare curved cut/etched glass windows. As you enter, on the right is some original cut/etched glazed screenwork, past which is a large room containing a pool table and dartboard. To the left of the main entrance is another large room with another pool table as its centrepiece, and another dartboard. At the back of this room is a stage, above which on the wall is displayed a trio of guitars, indicating that live music might be enjoyed here (although I saw no adverts for performances). The musical feel of this room is enhanced by the old LP covers all over the walls - mainly Elvis but also Sinatra. Doors at the end of the room lead to a function suite. I was the only customer in there, and the publican had the TV on tuned to the racing. Furnishings are all normal tables and chairs, and there were a few seats outside at the front on a decked patio area.

This is a magnificent suburban survivor from a bygone age. The original features are something special, and I hope it gets enough custom to keep going. It's probably not worth visiting for the beer though.
